How to pick a savings account in Mauritius

Compare interest methods, fees, access and balance tiers when choosing a savings account.

Look at the whole rate structure

Many Mauritian savings accounts pay tiered interest: a higher rate only above a minimum balance. A quoted 2% may only apply to the portion above Rs 100,000, with the first tranche earning much less.

Check fees and withdrawal limits

Monthly service fees, excess-withdrawal charges and branch-cash fees can wipe out interest earned. Accounts that restrict free withdrawals suit medium-term saving, not emergency funds.

Consider fixed deposits for certainty

If you do not need instant access, a fixed deposit usually pays more than a regular savings account. Compare rates by tenor: 12, 24 and 36 months can differ significantly.
